Rabies Diagnosis

چکیده

A cell culture infection test was developed for the isolation ofrabies virus from field cases submitted for rabies diagnosis. The procedure involved the addition of a suspension of suspect brain tissue to a suspension of murine neuroblastoma cells in 96-well microtiter plates. The cultures were then incubated at 35-36° C for four days at which time they were fixed, stained with a fluorescein-labelled hamster antirabies antibody conjugate and examined with a fluorescence microscope. Rabies antigen in cells was readily visible as brilliant, apple-green fluorescent particles. This technique was compared with the standard mouse inoculation test and was at least as sensitive to infection with small amounts of virus, required a much shorter test period and was substantially more economical than the mouse inoculation test. The new cell culture test is now in use at this laboratory, replacing the mouse inoculation test.

Approaches for Antemortem Diagnosis of Rabies

Diagnosis of rabies is of paramount importance. The diagnosis of this deadly disease has gained impetus with advent of molecular approaches. The major blockade in the usefulness o0f rabies diagnosis was the waiting period associated with dependence of most of the authentic diagnostic approaches on the brain tissue that would be available only after the death of the suspected animal. Now, with s...

Role of reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction for the diagnosis of human rabies

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Traditionally, rabies diagnosis is made by demonstration of rabies viral antigen by direct immunofluorescence (DIF) and mouse inoculation test (MIT). The present study was carried out to evaluate the role of reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in comparison with these conventional techniques for the diagnosis of rabies. METHODS Skin biopsies, corne...

Laboratory Diagnosis of Human Rabies: Recent Advances

Rabies, an acute progressive, fatal encephalomyelitis, transmitted most commonly through the bite of a rabid animal, is responsible for an estimated 61,000 human deaths worldwide. The true disease burden and public health impact due to rabies remain underestimated due to lack of sensitive laboratory diagnostic methods. Rapid diagnosis of rabies can help initiate prompt infection control and pub...

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SURVEY OF DIFFERENT RABIES VIRUS STRAINS IN IRAN

Rabies is widespread in all provinces of Iran. This study presents an investigation by a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technique for the purpose of rabies diagnosis and also Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) for determination of the type of the rabies virus. In addition, PCR proves to be a powerful tool for molecular epidemiology studies allowing analysis of the infecting strain...

Magnetic resonance imaging in rabies.

Rabies encephalitis has a classical clinical presentation and its diagnosis is unmistakable. In about a fifth of cases rabies occurs as its paralytic form, which lacks the classic symptoms and may mimic other diseases, especially acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM). Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain in rabies shows a distinct abnormal pattern that differentiates it from ADEM. Henc...
